MY FIRST DAY ON CREATIVE WRITING CLASS

On Monday, February, 18, 2013, it was my first day in the six semester. I felt energetic to go to campus because I would meet my friends who I never met approximately a month. I missed them so much as usually we had lunch together in Bonbin, one of canteen in FIB, and we do not do that activity. Moreover, I was more energetic to pass this day because I would learn two subjects that were exciting, “American Studies” and “Creative Writing”. Especially, “American Studies” was a subject that study about American from the early history to the present, while “Creative Writing” studied about how we could be creative when we wrote about something. Actually, I’ve got the introduction of those subjects in the previous semester. However, there was something different that I’ve not got yet so far. I’ve been taught by the lecturer of “American Studies ” in the previous semester on the different subject, but I’ve not been taught yet by the lecturer of “Creative Writing”, Mr. Dalih. I’m wondered and have some questions about this lecturer. Is he kind? Is he atractive? Or is he creative like his subject?
“Creative Writing” class started at 1 p.m. on F building in room 303. It would be hard for us because we had to walk up the high stare at noon. I guarantee it would bring the sweats to our body. Fortunately, the class did not start yet when I was there. The class was quiet and only 4-5 students who were there. However, I found a black bag and an mineral water beside it on the table. I concluded that those were my new lecturer’s stuff. Then, I simply understood that he was a dilligent lecturer, as have come to the class earlier than the teaching activity started.
Hopefully, in this course I could get what it was aimed in “Creative Writing”. I hoped I could be more creative in writing. I also expected to write several article in correct way and make them useful for the reader. What I expected on this course almost same with what Mr. Dalih explained in his syllabus. As the opening of this course, he gave an introduction about himself and about this course. Actually, I remember that I had ever met him. He was one of the speaker in workshop “Travel Blogging”. Moreover, he explained this course clearly.
After giving introduction, he asked us to explain the meaning of “reality”. His question invited us to think the best meaning it. We became more creative when we tried to answer it. There were many answers from my friend and almost every student participated. Even, my friend answers that reality was something that moved, real, etc. However, Mr. Dalih summed up our discussion in brief sentence that reality was something that was real when we could sense it with either one or all of the five senses; you used devices that helped your senses to capture its reality or prove it existed; you used models that could be proven with time or replaced with better models. From the way my lecturer summed up the definition of reality, I concluded that he was creative. He could make something more real and sensed.
The next activity in the class was Mr. Dalih explained the reality based on the five senses. Then, he asked us to describe something based on five senses, hearing; touch; taste; sight; smell. The class was exciting when Mr. Dalih asked four of us as the representatives to come to front to read their finding. Most of them described those senses clearly. However, their description was lack of “showing something”. I mean, they were just telling something without showing the evidence while they were describing something. Mr. Dalih said that in describing of something, we had to consider the two aspects; tell and show. I confused with his explanation. However, he gave an example “The taste of the steak brought sweats to her forehead”. The phrase “The taste of the steak” was “telling” while “brought sweats to her forehead” was “showing”. Telling was giving an idea while “showing” was how the reader could feel our idea (our feeling). That was what I appreciated wrom my new lecturer. He was not only creative but also responsibe in giving another explanation and example clearly.
In the end of the class Mr. Dalih gave us several tasks for this week. First, we had to send our at his email. Later, it would be used as the media showed how creative we wrote our writing. Moreover, it saved paper because every task would be posted in our blog. I think we learned something new that in lecturing we could use the social media as useful as possible than we wasted many papers. Second, he asked us to post our first assignment “Describing Something” on our blog.
I felt enjoy studying this course because in the first meeting I learned something new and something creative in writing. I hoped I could get A in the end of this semester. Amin. By the way, everyone please cheek my next writing and give me your comment to improve my writing! OK!.. Thanks before!
